Captions that sound like a person, not a press release
ยท Writing
The best captions read like something a friend would text you. A few small habits get you there every time.
Read your caption out loud before you post it. It sounds obvious, and it is the single fastest way to catch the sentence that no human being would actually say. If it feels stiff coming out of your own mouth, it will feel stiff to whoever scrolls past it.
Specificity beats cleverness almost every time. One true, small detail, the exact color, the exact reaction, the exact thing that happened, will land harder than three generic adjectives stacked on top of each other. Vague enthusiasm is easy to skip past. A specific detail is not.
Keep sentences short and let punctuation do some of the work. A caption does not need to explain everything in one breath. Two short sentences almost always read better than one long one trying to carry too much.
Not every caption needs to end with an instruction. Sometimes the warmest ending is a genuine question, or just a thought left open, rather than another call to action shouting for a click.
